Abstract: | The aim of this article is to describe firs results of project tending to develop a useful method for identifying and analysing trends as part of the search for intelligence and weak signals, particularly in the context of innovation. This method is developed as part of the Master's program Integrated Innovation for Product and Business Development – Innokick (HES-SO). It is originally based on a concept developed by designer Camille Sauthier, who was inspired to use the floral metaphor as a guide for reflection. Vincent Grèzes developed theoretical framing and case studies. Researchers worked together to progressively improve usability and sensemaking through experimentation. Methodology used to create and test this artifact is mainly based on design science (Gregor, 2007). The paper and the conference presentation present the literature review, as well as the concepts and their relationships that enable us to describe the evolution of a trend through time and actors, as well as its ramifications. We framed these elements into a visual model of strategic analysis we have named "The Trends Flower". We illustrate its application by analyzing various trends, then conclude with a discussion of the model's potential application for students, entrepreneurs and companies in their research, innovation and intelligence process. |
